What Is a Geriatric Nurse?

Understanding your role as a RPT

Geriatric care focuses on supporting the physical, emotional, social and functional needs of older adults. Ageing can affect mobility, cognition, nutrition, communication, independence, continence, skin integrity and overall wellbeing. Therefore, caregivers must understand how ageing affects the individual, recognise changes that may require attention, communicate effectively and provide care in a manner that protects dignity, safety and independence. GCI's Geriatric Nursing programmes are designed to develop these competencies progressively.

What You Will Learn

The programme develops knowledge and practical competencies in key areas of Geriatric Care.

  • Understand the ageing process and the physical, emotional and social changes that may affect older adults.

  • Learn the importance of dignity, respect, independence, preferences and individualised support.

  • Examine mobility challenges, positioning, fall risk and strategies for maintaining safety and independence.

  • Identify common environmental and personal risks that may contribute to falls and injury.

  • Develop greater understanding of accurate observation, reporting and care documentation.
  • Strengthen the ability to recognise physical, cognitive, behavioural and functional changes that should be communicated to appropriate healthcare personnel.

Level I may be appropriate for individuals entering geriatric care, persons supporting an older family member or those seeking introductory professional development.

Level II is particularly relevant for persons seeking deeper knowledge and greater responsibility within elderly-care environments.

Students will examine the needs of older adults in greater depth, including age-related health changes, cognitive decline, chronic conditions, observation, mobility limitations, skin integrity, nutrition, psychosocial wellbeing and communication with families and care teams.
