A Bespoke Healthcare Career-Exploration Experience

More Than a Career Talk

Many teenagers know they are interested in healthcare, but they may only be familiar with careers such as medicine or nursing. Healthcare is much broader. Teens in Health gives participants the opportunity to explore clinical, laboratory, diagnostic, emergency, allied health and specialist career pathways while gaining a better understanding of what working in healthcare actually involves.

Why Early Healthcare Career Exposure Matters

A teenager may know they enjoy science, want to help people or feel drawn to healthcare without yet knowing which profession best suits them. Teens in Health helps participants begin asking better questions: Which healthcare careers interest me? Do I prefer clinical, laboratory, technical or emergency environments? What subjects should I consider? What qualifications will I need? What does the job actually involve? How long will I have to study? What responsibilities come with the profession? What careers exist beyond medicine and nursing? The programme is not designed to choose a career for the participant. It is designed to give young people better information with which to make that decision.

What Participants May Explore

Teens in Health is not designed as a conventional classroom programme.

Each edition is developed as an interactive healthcare career experience, bringing together professional insight, practical exposure, career education and youth engagement. Programme activities may vary from year to year depending on participating healthcare professionals, institutional partners, facilities and the particular focus of each edition.

Areas of exploration may include:

One of the defining features of Teens in Health is the opportunity for young people to interact with individuals who understand healthcare beyond the textbook. These interactions allow teenagers to ask questions about education, career progression, professional expectations and the realities of working within healthcare.

Who Is Teens in Health For?

Teens in Health is designed for young people who:

Choosing a healthcare career is a significant decision. A teenager may know they enjoy science, want to help people or feel drawn toward healthcare without understanding which profession best matches their interests, strengths and personality.

Teens in Health is an educational and career-exploration programme.

It is not a healthcare qualification and does not authorise participants to practise medicine, nursing or any other healthcare profession. Where practical activities are incorporated, they are designed for education and exposure and are conducted within appropriate supervision, safety and age-related parameters.

The objective is career understanding — not independent clinical practice.

Building the Next Generation of Caribbean Healthcare Professionals

Teens in Health forms part of GCI’s broader commitment to strengthening the future healthcare workforce across Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean. Importantly, workforce development begins long before professional training. Young people first need exposure to career possibilities, an understanding of what different professions require and guidance on the academic decisions that can shape their future.

Therefore, GCI positions Teens in Health as the beginning of a longer developmental pathway:

Career Awareness → Career Exploration → Academic Choices → Education & Training → Professional Development → Caribbean Healthcare Workforce

As a result, participants are not simply introduced to healthcare careers. They begin developing the awareness needed to make more deliberate decisions about subjects, tertiary education and future professional pathways.

For Parents and Guardians

Parents want their teenagers to make informed academic and career decisions, but many young people are asked to choose subjects, programmes and career pathways before they have had any real exposure to the professions they are considering. Teens in Health gives your child the opportunity to explore healthcare in a structured, supervised and professionally guided environment before making those important decisions.

Give Your Teen Career Clarity Early

Healthcare includes far more than medicine and nursing. Through exposure to areas such as Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Cardiology, Medical Laboratory Science, Radiology and other specialties, participants can begin identifying which careers genuinely interest them.

Let Them Experience Healthcare Beyond the Classroom

Teens in Health is not simply a career talk. Participants engage in supervised demonstrations, simulations, practical activities and professional interactions that help them understand what healthcare environments and careers are actually like. Your teen gets an opportunity to move from simply saying, “I want to work in healthcare,” to understanding what different healthcare professionals actually do.

Connect Your Teen With Healthcare Professionals

Young people benefit from hearing directly from professionals who have already travelled the path they are considering. Participants may interact with physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, medical interns and other healthcare practitioners who can provide insight into education, training, professional expectations and everyday practice. These conversations can give your teen access to perspectives they may not normally encounter at school.

Help Them Make Better Academic Decisions

Subject selection and tertiary-education choices can have long-term consequences. Therefore, Teens in Health helps participants understand how academic decisions connect to different healthcare career pathways. In addition, the programme gives parents and teenagers a stronger foundation for discussing: * Subject selection * University and training options * Entry requirements * Length of study * Professional pathways * Career expectations As a result, families can make decisions based on greater understanding rather than assumptions.

Teens in Health Support Career Decision-Making

The programme also helps teenagers develop qualities that matter well beyond healthcare. By participating in a structured professional environment, asking questions, interacting with specialists and taking part in practical activities, teens can strengthen their confidence, communication, curiosity and awareness of professional standards. For many participants, Teens in Health may be their first meaningful opportunity to begin seeing themselves as a future healthcare professional. Give your teen the opportunity to explore before they have to decide.

Through volunteer engagement involving the Trinidad and Tobago Medical Students’ Association, participants may have opportunities to interact with medical students and medical interns. In particular, these near-peer conversations can provide first-hand insight into: * Choosing appropriate subjects * Applying to medical school * Preparing for demanding academic programmes * Adjusting to university life * Clinical rotations and hospital exposure * Managing the pressures of medical training * Developing professionalism and resilience * What medical students wish they had known as teenagers Most importantly, this form of mentorship can make the pathway into medicine easier for teenagers to understand. At the same time, it gives participants a more realistic view of the academic commitment and professional development required.
