What Is an Emergency Medical Responder?

Understanding your role as an EMR

Emergency Medical Responders may be among the first trained individuals to assess an emergency, identify immediate threats to life, provide basic emergency interventions and communicate critical information to other healthcare or emergency personnel.

What You Will Learn

The programme develops foundational knowledge and practical competencies across key areas of emergency medical response.

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of an Emergency Medical Responder and the importance of professional conduct, ethics, confidentiality and appropriate scope of practice.

  • Develop foundational knowledge of body systems and their relationship to common medical and traumatic emergencies.

  • Understand common cardiovascular emergencies and appropriate first-response actions, including recognition of signs requiring urgent intervention.

  • Develop foundational knowledge and skills for recognising and supporting patients experiencing airway or breathing difficulties within the Emergency Medical Responder’s scope of practice.

  • Develop competency in responding to cardiac arrest situations, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and appropriate use of an automated external defibrillator according to programme requirements.

  • Develop foundational skills for assessing and supporting patients affected by injuries, bleeding, shock, fractures and other traumatic emergencies.

  • Recognise significant bleeding and signs of shock and apply appropriate first-response interventions within the responder’s scope of training.

Practical competency is an essential component of the GCI Emergency Medical Responder Programme.

Students participate in supervised practical training and emergency-response simulations designed to develop confidence, situational awareness, patient-assessment skills and appropriate response techniques.

Practical sessions allow students to apply theoretical knowledge within realistic training scenarios while developing the discipline, communication and teamwork required during emergency situations.
